How the trail has developed
The development of St. Olavsleden began in 2011 and has since been carried out through a series of projects, supported in part by EU funding. Östersund Municipality has served as the project owner, working together with the six Swedish municipalities along the route from the Baltic Sea to the Norwegian border: Sundsvall, Ånge, Bräcke, Östersund, Krokom and Åre.
But St. Olavsleden could never have become what it is today without the many dedicated people, associations and businesses found along the trail. Those who have chosen to develop their local communities, welcome pilgrims and create experiences along the way are an important part of the trail’s soul – and its future.
Since February 2026, the Swedish section of the trail has been managed by S:t Olavsleden förvaltning ekonomisk förening, a cooperative association whose members are the six Swedish municipalities. Together, they are responsible for the trail’s continued development, as well as its website, general information and marketing. The aim is to enable both established and new local partners to help shape the experience of St. Olavsleden.
